Drones are among the most versatile tools of modern technology today. However, their use requires know-how, special equipment, and not least, high acquisition and operating costs. With the research project „Gemeinschaftsdrohne – Drone4All“, we are pursuing a completely new approach: drone technology should not only be reserved for a few experts, but should become usable as a communal, cost-effective service for everyone – for communities, businesses, and private individuals.

The idea behind it is simple, yet revolutionary: instead of each organisation acquiring its own drone, a shared system is created that functions like a digital infrastructure. Several high-tech drones are housed in a central station – an autonomous drone hangar. Users can select their desired service via a web portal, such as a survey, an inspection, or a recording for documentation purposes. The location, timeframe, and order are entered, and the drone then carries out the mission completely autonomously. The results are available analysed and clearly presented in the portal shortly afterwards.

This automation places high demands, as each drone must not only work precisely but also take external factors such as weather, battery level, flight corrections, obstacles, or prioritised missions into account. This is precisely the core of our research work: together with AIT, FH Kärnten, UBIMET, and Moosmoar Energies, we are developing a system that intelligently links all these parameters and thus creates a foundation for future autonomous drone services.

Drone4All demonstrates how versatile the applications are. The community drone can be used in disaster management to quickly survey affected areas. It can support communities in infrastructure monitoring, provide surveying data for planning, analyse agricultural land, or assist in building management to detect roof or facade damage early on. All these applications are covered by a communally used flying system – without each user having to invest in technology or training themselves.

The approach deliberately follows the principle of the „Shared Economy“. By sharing resources, costs are minimised and technologies that were previously unattainable in many areas are simultaneously made accessible. This creates a new standard that makes drones an integral part of public and private services.

The project also provides important foundations for future topics such as autonomous delivery drones or drone taxis. These systems will only be feasible if complex parameters such as energy consumption, weather influences, or safety assessments are automatically taken into account – precisely those aspects that are researched and tested in Drone4All.

„Drone4All“ is therefore not just a technological experiment, but a visionary step towards a digitally connected society in which drone services are used as naturally as car-sharing, e-bikes or public transport today. It is a project that shows how innovation can enter everyday life – and how we can shape the future of airspace together.
